How to find a compatible healer/reader?

A person laying down receiving energy healing.

The market is oversaturated with healers and readers of all kinds. With so much choice available it might be hard to determine who is the right healer or reader for you. It could be confusing to even choose the right modality for your problem or issue. When I use the term healer/reader I am referring to tarot readers, astrologers, numerologists, Reiki practitioners, witches, brujas, mediums really any kind of modality you can think of. This article will help you identify what kind of healer/reader is most fitting for you.

Why are you seeking a reading?

The first step to choosing the most appropriate healer is to pinpoint what your issue is. For some this might be easier to identify than for others. Sometimes your question could use a bit of finetuning. You might ask, “why did my ex leave me for Sally?” This is a totally valid question, however, it might be more fruitful to ask,
“what are my blockages preventing me from experiencing unconditional love?” The latter question gives your healer more of a jumping off point and also centers the question on you and what you can control. The former question is narrower and more centered on your ex.

You might not have a specific question and may just be curious about what a reading can offer. In this case brainstorm at least 1-3 issues to bring to your healer. For instance, you are receiving your first Reiki healing. You could just go into the healing without any points of concern or you could mention your back pain from a car accident or the grief over losing your animal companion. It’s not a requirement to bring specific issues but it can help a healer focus in on what is most important to you. Ultimately, you are paying for a service so determining what subjects you bring attention to is a way of you guiding the reading and getting your money’s worth.

What modality is right for you?

If you broke your tooth you would go to a dentist not a podiatrist. This same rule applies to healers. If you want to commune with your deceased aunt you would seek the expertise of a medium not a numerologist. When seeking a healer ask yourself what is the crux of your issue? After you determine the core you can better understand what modality works for your situation. If you need to break a spell you could go to a witch or bruja who provides that, you wouldn’t go to an astrologer. Although, many healers/readers practice multiple modalities. For example, I am a tarot reader, astrologer and witch. That said you still want to make sure you are choosing the right modality for your issue. You can always contact a healer/reader tell them your situation and ask if they can help you. If you are not familiar with a modality you can teach yourself about it by going online and reading from credible sources or perhaps asking a friend for clarification.

Avoid scams!

Most credible healers are not mass messaging people on Instagram insisting you purchase a reading for them. Most established healers/readers have websites with contact information provided. Please be careful with your energy and money. Don’t give it to people solely looking for a profit.

Who can vouch for your reader?

Number of followers does not equal psychic ability or talent. When searching for a healer you benefit from asking your community for recommendations. Word of mouth is a powerful tool and my personal favorite way to find readers/healers. Many readers/healers offer a page of testiomonials on their website which might be illuminating on how they structure a session and their vibe. They might also include in their website a bio or education tab stating who their teachers are. By reading up on someone’s teachers or education you can achieve greater understanding of their practice and skillset. It is important to note that people can lie about their education or reviews. I have heard of this happening before. Which is why word of mouth testimonials can be incredibly handy and also why the next section is very critical to picking a healer…

What does your intuition say about them?

Do you have a good feeling in your gut that they are the right person for you or is there any hesitation or resistance? If you have a not great feeling about someone don’t patronize them. That feeling is valuable. It doesn’t necessarily mean they are a bad person but maybe just not the right healer to answer your question. Conversely, do you have a very strong positive feeling about them? Listen to it and also do research into their content, practice, and values.

Are you supporting QTBIPOC people?

When searching for a reader/healer are you including in your search Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Color? Just because someone is Black doesn’t mean they are the right healer for you, however, supporting marginalized identities should be at the forefront of our money spending practices if possible and especially for white people. There are SO many talented QTBIPOC readers out there and they still don’t get the same attention as white healers or white passing healers. So please go out of your way to seek QTBIPOC readers especially those who have anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist and anti-imperialist politics. Again, word of mouth would truly be helpful in discovering them.
